January Favorites

I'm heading out for the weekend to Philly to meet up with my family for some great food, shopping, and picking up my mom's new car. I'm beyond excited to escape the city for a little bit. Especially because of the cold-- our apartment is freezing! Luckily, I bought a little space heater last year from Bed, Bath, and Beyond - otherwise my sister and I would be popsicles. We live in an older building, so we have steam heat that we can kind of control. We can turn it on - but it doesn't mean we get heat. My sister and I love where we live, but if we could get in a newer building with a doorman, elevator, and a thermostat that you can control , we would love to. Sadly, we can't afford our dream apartment, so we became best friends with our little space heater.

Here are a few of my favorite things for January! It's been a cold month all across the US and is always a blahh month. The holidays are over, the sales are picked over or done, and you just can't wait for spring. These things helped to make my January a little better.

BEAUTY

I got this amazing product in the Sephora Favorites Super Stars Box. I went to buy it before Christmas at the Sephora back home, but they sold out of it. They said it was still online, so I went home and tried to buy it. Of course, it was sold out there as well. From stalking the website for a little bit, I found it back in stock at the Sephora by my apartment. Score! This eyeliner was full size and I love it. It goes on nice and smooth and looks great all day. You don't have to sharpen it or worry it will smudge once it dries.

Originally my mom bought this for herself because she loved the colors. She used it for a few days and decided there were too many "sprinkles" aka glitter in it. She gave it to me and bought the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette instead since there were no glitters in it. My sister and I both have the Urban Decay Naked 2 palettes and love them, but I find myself reaching for this one a little more this month. The shadows are a great formula that looks great all day long. Of course, it seems to be popular since all the Sephora's I've been to since I've started using it have been sold out. Clearly others like this as much as I do!

This one is more of a re-find than a new product. I used to be obsessed with this color and it was my go to when I was younger and got my nail done. However, I never bought it. But, when my sister and I went home, we got our nails done with my mom. We both picked gel colors since it lasts longer and doesn't chip. I thought I was getting a red, but I guess I told the guy the wrong number and ended up with this. Luckily, I still love the color. The salon wasn't the best at gel -- we typically go to a salon by NYU that does an AMAZING job. My sister took hers off after 2 weeks (she normally can get a good 4-5 weeks out of a gel because her nails don't grow fast). I'm still hanging on at almost week 3, but it's starting to chip at the end and is bugging me when I do my hair. So, we won't be going back to that salon for gel -but I think its time for me to buy this gorgeous nail color in the regular finish.

FASHION

I loved this J. Crew shirt from the first time I saw it in store. Unfortunately, all the stores I went to were either sold out or had it in an XXS or XL. When looking for birthday presents for my grandmother, I found it in a size small. It was on sale -- and an additional 50% off the sale price. Needless to say, it came home with me. It's such a cute t-shirt that can be dressed up with a blazer or stay casual with a chambray shirt and statement necklace tossed over it. They had a few other sayings, but I still haven't found anymore in my size.

Amazing Sales are currently going on. From Bloomingdales where they were running an additional percentage off sale in store, to J. Crew's 50% off sale items. Now is the time to buy any Fall/Winter merchandise you might want for next year. Some things like t-shirts in basic colors, denim, and sweaters are great to buy now. You know you'll need them - so why not stock up when they're on sale instead of buying for full price come September?

MUSIC

Before it closed earlier this month, I had seen Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark (2.0) on Broadway a few times. I saw it once just to see it, then my family was in town and it was the only show they wanted to see, and then our friend joined the show (my sister and I were fortunate enough to see her go on twice, go backstage, and see her final performance where she was Arachne right before Sandy hit). She introduced us to Zane Carney, who was one of the guitarists/ awesome guy. I knew Zane and Reeve had a band called Carney. I spent a lot of time listening to their stuff on Youtube and wishing they would have a show. Bring in Zane's Rockwood February Residency in 2013. I think I went to every single show, but one because of an exam the next day. He played a few shows throughout the rest of the year, including a few with Reeve. He's out on tour with John Mayer now and is becoming more popular. His debut EP is out on iTunes, Confluence, and is amazing. I believe he's playing a few more shows at Rockwood in February, so be sure to check him out if you can. He promotes this amazing app called Spacebar, so even if you aren't 21 or are not in NYC or LA when he's playing - you can still listen to him (or other artists at a few venues).

Bargain-ista

While I fully believe in some things being bought full price -- such as Rag & Bone Harrow/ Newburry Booties in black, classic Louboutins (Simples, Pigalle, VP, Ron Ron, etc), Balenciaga Moto Bag, Burberry Trench Coat, your perfect LBD. But, most things that are a fad or you want to try out before shelling out for the good things, you usually can buy for less. I try not to buy many things full price. In my closet, there isn't much I bought full price - but the stuff I did buy for less, I do wind up wearing. I don't buy just based on labels and prices. Here are some of my tricks for finding some of the best stuff at discount stores (TJMaxx, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, Off Fifth, etc.) that you will actually wear and love just as much as items that you paid full price!

  1. Do I need it? When I find something I like, I immediately ask myself if I really need yet another one of it. If I already have something like it, do I wear it a lot? Do I find myself reaching for it a lot? I always have a running list of items I am looking for - some have been on the list awhile (grey suede pointed toe pumps) while others are new (Rebecca Minkoff MAC bag)
  2. Is the price right? Sometimes you buy just because it is *insert brand name here* for ONLY *price*. But, will you really wear it it? Or are you just buying on the price? At the same time, you can take some fashion risks if the price is right.
Take these gold Rag & Bone Newbury boots for example. They had a few pairs at my home TJMaxx for about $150. They're cute, but I wasn't sure how much I would wear them. When I was home after the New Year, they went down to $100. I have my mom checking every so often. If they are still there and $50, I would buy them. They are fun - and Steelers colors! However, I would have never bought for the original price of $550.
  3. Make yourself a list -- of items you are looking for and want. Nordstrom has an amazing return policy, so it makes some finds at the Rack better than what you would find at other discount retailers. They are marked "Worn and Refinished" - typically they are items that were bought and the person decided they didn't want them after using them once or they were a floor model. I've gotten some amazing deals and read about even more amazing deals from some of the ladies over at the Purse Forum. Recent finds include Rag & Bone Harrow booties, Ivanka Trump nude pumps for my sister, a pair of Citizens of Humanity jeans, and a Celine bag (that was seriously scratched up - I went two days in a row and it was gone the next day). Some items on my list include items I'm just on the look out for, some at the right price, and others are items I would only hope to find in my size worn & refinished. Highlights include:
  4.  Think on it. A lot of my purchases are in pulse buys, and I've cut down on them considerably. Text a friend, sister, or mom to see if they think it's a good purchase. Luckily, most stores have great return policies. Take it home, try it on with your clothes, and your lighting to see if you really can see it in your wardrobe.
  5. Don't underestimate department stores. Figure out when stores have their best deals -- Saks always has amazing sales on December 26th and around New Years. They are typically around an additional 50% off sale. My sister got some amazing gowns at Saks for $100 -- which is less than a lot of the dresses on Rent the Runway. Check in store and online, if possible. But I find most of the deals are in store. Bloomingdales had an additional 50% off shoes -- there were dressy shoes for formal events under $50, Sperry's for $30. It's really the time to stock up! If you know you have an event coming up (wedding, prom, gala, etc.), its best to buy in advance. I bought my prom dress from BCBG in January/February for around $75 while all my friends paid full price when they went shopping in April.
  6. It's ok to splurge every once in awhile. I had my eye on the Christian Louboutin Simple Pumps for years. I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair in black around Christmas. Of course, I can't wear them at the moment with all the snow - but I know they'll be a classic shoe that I'll have forever.
  7. Don't buy if it doesn't fit -- I've bought shoes and clothing that is too big and some that is too small. Luckily, I have a younger sister who enjoys it. But I never get what I paid for it on eBay or at consignment stores. If it doesn't fit, you won't wear it no matter how good of a deal it is.
  8. eBay plans don't work out as expected. I've bought stuff with the intention of putting it on eBay. I typically don't make the money and it goes back (thank goodness for return policies!) or I don't make nearly as much as anticipated. $20 is not enough for the stress and time it takes to list an item, answer questions, ship, and all the other good stuff that comes with eBay. Only buy it if you know you'll find a good home for it (whether it is you, a family member, or friend).
  9. Visit these stores frequently! Most of these stores get new merchandise in on a weekly or daily basis. Follow your favorite store on social media and don't be afraid to just pop in if you have an extra 10 minutes. Becoming friends with the sales people will probably help you in this case!
  10. Have fun with your shopping, and don't be afraid to take risks! I've bought items I wasn't sure how often I would wear and they have become some of the most worn items in my closet. You don't have to spend thousands on your clothes to feel your best.

My favorite bargain buy?  A TSE Black Cashmere Cardigan that would probably retail for over $400 for $20. I wear it all the time. Super soft, classic, and one of my favorite sweaters to wear in the winter.

Happy Shopping!

2014 -- Totally Trying

I'm one of those people that becomes obsessed with a product and won't buy or try anything else (see my 4 pairs of Citizens of Humanity Avedon Skinny Jeans or only MAC concealer), but I'm always trying to branch out and try some new things - at least once! Here are some of the things I'm planning on trying in 2014.

I got this face wash from the MC Beauty sale because I had heard great things from the brand from Ingrid (missglamorazzi on Youtube) and my favorite Soap and Glory face wash was discontinued in the US. I have super sensitive skin, so I figured the organic should agree with my face and not make it puff up like it sometimes does.

I am obsessed with nail polish. Yet, I stick to the brands I know and love such as OPI, Essie, Julep, Chanel. However, the beauty sale had some gorgeous colors that had great sparkle, so I had to get them. I got a gel manicure when I was home, but I plan on trying these out as soon as it is time to take off.

During the winter I get the driest lips ever. I am constantly rotating chapstick and putting more on. I typically keep a FRESH lip balm in my purse and put the La Mer lip treatment on before bed. This seems like a happy medium. Plus, another Youtuber, Elle Fowler (Allthatglitters21) is addicted to it. I didn't become a VIB at Sephora until after their sale was over, but I hope to pick it up at their next sale -- or maybe with a gift card I got for Christmas.

I always wear the same earrings-- either a pair of stud fake diamonds or a pair of stud pearls. I saw these at Nordstrom and for less than $15, I had to take them home. I loved all three pairs for different occasions, so am going to try and wear different earrings more often. Maybe even get into dangly earrings since I always wear studs.

Color

If you take a look at the "work" area of my wardrobe -- it's almost all black clothing with a few colored tops. It's what we had to wear for market and is such a staple in the fashion industry. However, I want to start buying fun pants, colorful tops, and shoes that aren't black or nude. I'm going to try branching out and wearing more color. Besides the sale sweatpants I get at Victoria's Secret Pink that my mom will make fun of me for (Hey - for $15, you shouldn't be too picky. They're for BED and occasionally walking the dog at night while home).

These are my current plans and goals to try in 2014. Obviously things will change, I will totally add things, and have left off things. I want to travel more, explore new neighborhoods, find the perfect job, and get a puppy (that one will not be happening unless I get a job to work from home and I can magically get permission from my landlord. Our lease we signed over a year ago and renewed this past July states no animals such as cats or dogs. Plus, Belle would get jealous when I came home with another dog!)

What are you hoping to accomplish or try in 2014?

Looking Back

2013 was an amazing year filled with so many different experiences and things I never thought would happen. We're now a few days into 2014 and more continues to change. I decided between the stress, unknowing, and other factors to quit my job as a Freelance Fashion Assistant at Marie Claire. I was in over the holidays training my replacement and I hope she does a great job. It was honestly a hard decision, but I feel like it is for the best. Because of this decision, I was able to spend Christmas with my family and am feeling better than I had since August. I've been able to spend time with my sister and cousin, eat some great food, and have fun shopping.

I've decided to make a list of some of my favorite things from 2013:

My sister got this product for me for Christmas and I LOVE it. My Lush obsession started small with soap last Christmas, when my mom and I got some with the buy one, get one free sale after Christmas. Since then, I've expanded and basically want to buy the whole store when I go in. But this is my favorite product at the moment. I have little bumps on my arms that I've had since I can remember. I've tried so many scrubs and lotions to help fix them. This product is great because it exfoliates while moisturizing. I come out of the show and don't have to put any moisturizers on even in dry weather!

These little mozzarella are genius. I was buying either the $5 or $10 balls of fresh mozzarella at Whole Foods and never using the whole thing before it went bad. These little balls stay fresh for 2 months in their packaging. You get the perfect amount of cheese without wasting any. I toss the cheese in with pasta, salads, or even just eat on its own for a snack.

Vera Bradley Throw Blanket

I used to love Vera Bradley – I still have a ton of bags and pouches of all sizes in varying prints. My mom and I went into the store and fell in love with their blankets after going in for a key chain. They are super long, soft, and cuddly. My sister and I each have one in our apartment – and my mom has two at home. I just got a “We Miss You” $20 coupon – so we might be buying another one to put away. We gave these as Christmas presents to my grandmothers and they both love them.

I really only started getting into putting a full face of makeup on in January 2013. Before that, it didn't matter much what I looked like for school. But with the restrictions to what to wear for Valentino Market, I figured I should look professional. This is my favorite foundation - it's not heavy, it gives great coverage, and looks great on. I've been trying BB creams also, but I keep coming back to this. It is expensive, but my first bottle lasted me from January - September.

I am obsessed with nail polish. These are my favorite for the price, size, and color selection. I bought one at Sephora because it was the perfect metallic. Then I bought a mystery box and now I am trying to use all my nail polish at least once before buying any more. These are easy to hold, have great coverage, and amazing color selections. I'm a "Classic with a Twist", how about you?

Valentino Rockstuds are my by far best purchase in the shoe department (and I've bought a lot of shoes this year also including Rag & Bone booties, Christian Louboutin, Lanvin, and L. K. Bennett). I bought the above shoes while interning at Valentino for my birthday. I am obsessed. They are perfect. They are comfortable, unique, and the perfect nude. I had originally wanted the Christian Louboutin Simple in Nude, but these are so much more unique. I constantly got compliments when I wore them out and at the Marie Claire offices.

The perfect black pants for work. I have two pairs of them and love them. I bought both pairs from Bloomingdales, which has the best denim selection in the city - especially when they are running sales or have Friends & Family going on.

Some other things that don't need pictures and whole posts include Leather Spa (all my designer shoes go to get rubber soles put on before I wear them), Dry Bar, Gel Manicures, upcoming Broadway shows, figuring out how to get library books on my Kindle/iPad, and See's Candy (they opened up one in my hometown mall - I'm obsessed with their Scotch Kisses and a few of their chocolate selections).

Those are my favorites from this year. There are plenty of runners up and products I haven't tried enough to love yet. I'll follow up with a What I Want to Try in 2014 post. There are plenty of objects I have my eye on in stores or I have sitting in my apartment!
